This meeting was held on 29 February and 1 March 2024 in Lima, Peru.

Latin American Development Banking System: Strategic fields of action and scope of the international financial architecture

Since 2020, Latin America and the Caribbean have been confronted with overlapping economic, environmental, health, and geopolitical crises, reshaping the role and strategies of development banking. This paper examines the challenges and opportunities facing development finance institutions, including issues such as food security, energy transition, financial inclusion, and infrastructure investment. It also highlights the pressing need for reforms and international collaboration to solidify development banking as a vital public policy instrument, capable of addressing global trends and mobilizing resources on a significant scale.

Climate financing in Latin America and the Caribbean: How are public development banks supporting the climate transition?

In this publication, we provide an overview of climate risks in Latin America and Caribbean countries, using the European Investment Bank’s country climate risk scores. This is followed by an assessment of the region’s climate investment needs and potential sources of financing, against the current macroeconomic and fiscal backdrop. We describe the role of public development banks in the region, their current contribution to mitigating climate risks, and the results of our survey. In the last section, we present the main findings and policy recommendations.

This document describes the principal ideas, proposals and results of the Third Roundtable of Chief Economists of Latin American and Caribbean Development Banks. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the transformation of the production system, regional integration and the role of the development banking system. An effort was made, through dialogue, to share pertinent experiences and practices in countries of the region with regard to problems involving the production structure in the areas of trade, finance and environment. Development and innovation were also examined in greater depth as a means for boosting public policy design to that effect.
