DFC of Belize obtains Green Climate Fund accreditation

  • ALIDE member institution becomes the first financial entity in Belize with direct access to international climate finance.

11 July, 2025- The Development Finance Corporation (DFC) of Belize, a member institution of the Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE), has been officially accredited by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), marking a historic milestone in consolidating its leadership in both national and international climate action.

This accreditation positions DFC as a Direct Access Entity (DAE) to the GCF, enabling it to directly mobilize and manage up to USD 50 million in climate finance for low-risk, high-impact projects. The accreditation covers basic and specialized fiduciary standards, project management, and financing schemes such as loans, equity, and guarantees.

Boosting Belize’s climate resilience and sustainable development

The accreditation is the result of a multi-year technical and strategic process, during which DFC aligned its governance, fiduciary structure, and Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) with international standards. It also developed a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) strategy, demonstrating its readiness to lead the country’s climate finance agenda.

With this accreditation, DFC is now able to finance transformative projects across key climate action areas, including:

  • Energy generation and access
  • Resilient cities, industries, and buildings
  • Livelihoods of vulnerable communities
  • Water, food, and health security
  • Public, private, and cross-cutting projects

Regional leadership

DFC’s Board of Directors expressed its gratitude to the Green Climate Fund for its trust in the institution’s capacity and mission, and to the Ministry of Economic Transformation of Belize —the country’s National Designated Authority to the GCF— for its support throughout the accreditation process. The Board also commended the commitment of the DFC team, whose dedication was key to integrating sustainability across its operational model.

This achievement not only strengthens DFC’s role as a driver of sustainable development in Belize but also reinforces its standing within the ALIDE community. Furthermore, it reaffirms the commitment of development banks in the region to mobilize resources to address the climate crisis with inclusive, sustainable, and high-impact solutions.
