The 53rd ALIDE General Assembly was inaugurated in San Pedro Sula

  • On the first day of the event, the first plenary session, the workshop on sustainable food systems and the signing of the UNIDO – ALIDE joint declaration took place.

May 31, 2023- The 53rd ALIDE General Assembly organized by the Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) and Banco Hondureño para la Producción y la Vivienda (BANHPROVI) was inaugurated in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and was attended by nearly 200 representatives of development banks worldwide.

The annual meeting began with the opening session where the President of ALIDE, Luis Antonio Ramírez, emphasized the importance of promoting regional integration and strengthening cooperation between countries and financial institutions.

In addition, President Ramírez highlighted the relevance of strengthening the role of development banks in economic reactivation and progress towards sustainable development.

At the opening, the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, participated virtually; and the Minister of Tourism of Honduras, Yadira Gómez; the Secretary General of ALIDE, Edgardo Alvarez; the President of BANHPROVI and Director of ALIDE, Edwin Araque, and the CEO of Korpodeko and Vice President of ALIDE, Chesron Isidora, participated in person.

And during the first plenary session on the “Role of public policies to attract world-class investors and the role of development banking”, the main challenges faced by development banks in Latin America and the Caribbean in the new global context were identified.

The importance of public policies and sustainable technologies for economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic was also discussed.

The first day of the event continued with the “Sustainable food systems and financial inclusion of small-scale agriculture” workshop, which featured a keynote presentation by the chief economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Máximo Torero.

In addition, the director general of FIRA, Alan Elizondo; the manager of the BROU Economy Advisory, Lorena Sánchez, among other specialists from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Banco Centroamericano de la Integración Económica (BCIE) were as panelists.

UNIDO – ALIDE Joint Declaration

On the first day of the assembly, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and ALIDE signed a joint declaration with the aim of joining efforts to promote sustainable industrial development in the region.

This agreement was signed by Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO, and Edgardo Alvarez, Secretary General of ALIDE, to promote the transfer of knowledge, experience, technologies and economic resources.

“Both of our organizations are closely linked in a great objective; that is, the development of Latin America and the Caribbean, and particularly in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”, mentioned the Secretary General of ALIDE, Edgardo Alvarez.

“Ambas organizaciones estamos vinculados muy estrechamente en un gran objetivo, esto es, el desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe, y particularmente en el logro del Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible 9: Industria, Innovación e Infraestructura”, mencionó el secretario general de ALIDE, Edgardo Alvarez.
