ALIDE Drives Energy Transition and Climate Action at COP30

  • ALIDE Secretary General, Edgardo Alvarez, participated in the official launch of the FiCS Energy Transition Coalition and in the debate on the future of global climate finance, organized by the Foresight for Sustainable Finance Initiative.

November 21, 2025- The Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) took part in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, reaffirming the commitment of Latin America and the Caribbean’s development banks to energy transition, climate finance, and sustainable bioeconomy.

ALIDE at the Launch of the FiCS Energy Transition Coalition

During COP30, ALIDE joined the panel Unlocking Finance for Energy Transition: The Role of Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), where the FiCS Energy Transition Coalition was officially launched — a new platform aimed at coordinating financing for clean energy access, energy efficiency, and decarbonization.

The initiative — developed by Finance in Common (FiCS) in coordination with ABDE (Associação Brasileira de Desenvolvimento), Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, and BNDES — seeks to transform dialogue into action by strengthening coordination, innovation, and the collective capacity of public development banks.

During the launch, ALIDE Secretary General Edgardo Alvarez emphasized the region’s strategic role, stating:

“We believe that the contribution of Latin American and Caribbean development banks to the energy transition could be deepened through concrete decisions which combine scale, specialization, and financial innovation.”

Alvarez also highlighted the importance of coordinating global efforts through platforms such as Finance in Common — and particularly the FiCS Energy Transition Coalition — to multiply regional impact and accelerate joint solutions.

Fast Forward to 2050: Rethinking the Future of Climate Finance

ALIDE also co-organized the panel Fast Forward to 2050: Exploring the Futures of Climate Finance, held at the International Development Finance Club (IDFC) Pavilion. The session fostered a forward-looking dialogue on possible futures for global climate finance and on how long-term thinking can guide the transformation of financial systems.

In his remarks, ALIDE Secretary General underscored the proactive role of development banks, noting:

“Sustainable finance should not only respond to change but anticipate and shape it. Development finance institutions, with our experience, our public mandate, and our long-term vision, must help lead this transformation.”

The event was organized in partnership with the Foresight for Sustainable Finance Initiative, an alliance that includes ALIDE, the European Climate Foundation, FiCS, Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), and UNEP FI, in collaboration with the OECD.

Sustainable Financing for Bioeconomy and Biomes

ALIDE also participated in the event “Bioeconomy and Sustainable Financing for the Biomes,” co-organized by ABDE, Banco da Amazônia, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The session brought together representatives from the National Development Financing System (SNF), regional and multilateral development banks, the private sector, civil society, and academia to strengthen the role of public banks in financing the sustainable bioeconomy, biodiversity conservation, and low-emission agriculture.

During the event, Romy Calderón, Head of ALIDE’s Economic Studies and Information Program, joined the roundtables “Voices of the Bioeconomy – Producers and Investors” and “How to Scale Production Chains in the Amazon.”

The ALIDE Verde Award was also presented, recognizing projects and initiatives by development finance institutions that promote environmental sustainability in the region.
