ALIDE Strengthens Ties with Global Development Banking Institutions in Bangkok

  • ALIDE Secretary General Edgardo Alvarez participated in meetings and discussions with representatives of development finance institutions from different regions, aimed at exchanging experiences, strengthening institutional relations, and identifying opportunities for cooperation.

November 6, 2026- The Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) participated in various activities held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings. These gatherings provided an opportunity to strengthen ties with development finance institutions and regional associations from around the world, as well as to explore new opportunities for international cooperation.

As part of this agenda, ALIDE Secretary General Edgardo Alvarez met with Ngo Bakang Anny Caroll, Secretary General of the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA); Prasun Kumar, Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA); and representatives of Thailand’s Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC).

The meeting addressed issues of common interest and potential opportunities for cooperation among the regional associations. Participants also exchanged views on the organization of the 9th World Congress on Rural and Agricultural Finance, including possible forms of collaboration and institutional participation in this international event.

Dialogue on Infrastructure and Long-Term Investment

The ALIDE representative also attended the D20-LTIC Strategic Corridors Dialogue, organized by the D20 Long-Term Investors Club in collaboration with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), of Italy.

The meeting focused on the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and brought together representatives of governments, development banks, international institutions, and private sector organizations. Discussions examined the conditions needed to transform transport corridors into economic corridors that generate social and productive benefits for local communities and contribute to long-term growth.

Participation in the WFDFI Board of Governors Meeting

In his role as Secretary General of the World Federation of Development Financing Institutions (WFDFI), Edgardo Alvarez delivered the opening remarks at its 2026 Board of Governors (BOG) Meeting, also held in Bangkok.

The agenda included discussions on FiCS 2.0 and WFDFI’s proposed role as a Development Partner of Finance in Common (FiCS), as well as a review of the Secretary-General’s Report for 2026–2027, covering the Federation’s programs and activities, membership matters, and financial situation.

Strengthening Institutional Relations

ALIDE’s participation in these meetings also provided an opportunity to maintain contact with representatives of member institutions, including Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) of Germany and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), as well as to establish connections with other international financial institutions and organizations, such as the International Development Finance Club (IDFC), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), and Shelter Afrique Development Bank.

These activities are part of ALIDE’s ongoing efforts to expand its international cooperation networks, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences, and identify opportunities for collaboration that contribute to strengthening development banking in Latin America and the Caribbean.
