Development banks of Brazil, Mexico, Honduras and Argentina are ALIDE 2021 Prizewinners

  • The winning projects are noteworthy for their social projection, results and contribution in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.

May 26, 2021- Development banks of Brazil, Mexico, Honduras and Argentina are ALIDE 2021 prizewinners.  The Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) revealed the contest winners, pointing up the social projection, results achieved and contribution of the projects in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.

The announcement was made during the 51st ALIDE General Assembly, the annual Latin American development banking forum.  The Association reported that the winning institutions had participated in the contest, together with another 15 LAC institutions, presenting products, services and programs of different kinds.

On this occasion, the winning institutions were the Banco Hondureño para la Producción y la Vivienda (Banhprovi), the Banco Nacional de Comercio Exterior (Bancomext), of Mexico, the Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), of Brazil, the Banco do Nordeste do Brasil (BNB) and the Sociedad Hipotecaria Federal (SHF), of Mexico.

The ALIDE Prizes are known to have been instituted in 2008 for the purpose of identifying and honoring the best Development Bank practices, as well as to provide recognition of the efforts of these institutions in the economic and social development of the region’s countries.

Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires de Argentina

Digital Wallet DNI Account

The DNI Account is the Banco Provincia’s digital wallet, which makes it possible to carry out multiple transactions for 24 hours a day over a mobile phone. It is widely used by all sectors of Argentina’s population. Between April 2020 and 2021, over 3 million persons, users, engaged in 36 million transactions for a value of some US$ 1 500 million. It proved to be a key tool for massive financial inclusion during the pandemic.

Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), De Brasil

Saving Lives Matchfunding

BNDES employed its capacity to coordinate partners in the public and private sectors to create this philanthropic fund that operates under a «matchfunding» logic –in other words, a support institution monitors the donations of other donors, with a view to supporting Brazil’s philanthropic hospitals in their mission to save lives. The BNDES will donate R$1 for each R$1 granted by the donors, thereby doubling the value of the donations. At April 9, 2021, the Fund had benefited 627 philanthropic institutions or public hospitals.

Banco do Nordeste (BNB) de Brasil

Fne Sol: “Produce your Own Energy and the Planet will Thank You”

A Bank finance line for implementing micro and mini food generating systems by means of renewable sources. The credit targets rural producers and enterprises capable of generating their own energy. All told, 7 226 operations have been carried out since its launching, with contracts signed for a total value of US$ 42.3 million. The line has already reached 33.4 % of the municipalities in its area of influence: 664 municipalities have been served.

Sociedad Hipotecaria Federal (SHF), de México

Nama Facility

This is a technical assistance and subsidy program for tailor-made SME investment. Its purpose is to facilitate the progressive incorporation of small and medium developers into the low carbon housing market, by eliminating barriers to investment and financing. At March 2021, the Nama Facility Program reported 5 250 homes financed, corresponding to 40 projects distributed among 25 small and medium developers. A total of US$78 million raised through financial institutions funded by SHF was allocated through bridge loans for construction purposes.
