7th World Congress: ALIDE moderates session on sustainable rural and agricultural development in LAC

  • During the first day of the event, the current situation of the agricultural sector was analyzed and experiences were shared in regard to programs and mechanisms for confronting its challenges.

23 de noviembre 2022- The Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) moderated the session on “Sustainable Rural and Agricultural Development Finance in LAC. Role of the National Public Development Banks” during the 7th World Congress on Rural & Agricultural Finance being held in Morelia, Mexico.

The proceedings focused on examining the efforts of public development banks to promote the financing of sustainable agriculture and boost rural development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Agricultural production is closely related to the soil and nature. Agricultural sciences are categoric in this regard. Only through agroecological practices can sustainable models be developed and for that reason they are so important,” stressed Claude Torre, French Development Agency (AFD) project manager.

Moderator Romy Calderón, ALIDE’s Head of Economic Studies and Information, for his part, explained that “as of the pandemic, the agricultural sector, in Latin America’s case, has been operated as a strategic sector” because it showed itself to be important for ensuring the continued flow of food products to the people’s homes and their tables.

During the session, Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay (BROU) and Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (BAPRO) also shared experiences and initiatives in supporting the agricultural sector.

After commenting that livestock breeding is Uruguay’s foremost export activity, Gabriela Fernández, BROU Executive Manager, asserted that her institution is, historically speaking, the bank that has continued to support the agricultural sector.

During the second day’s sessions, themes were discussed relating to the blue economy, product value chains, green finance and guarantee systems as driving forces for agricultural finance.
