CENTRAL TOPIC:
Sectorial and Territorial Latin-American Development: knowledge, innovation, technology and impact financing

Territorial development –urban and rural– needs to take into account intelligently the process of growth of the different economic and social sectors, a process in which development banking plays an important role in promoting and financing it. From the promotion of cities of knowledge where innovation for activities with high added value based on state-of-the-art technology; the sustainable sectorial and productive development, functional to the projection of the city and the country and to the narrowing the rural-urban gap; as well as the continued reinvention of development financial institutions to be able to address the challenges posed by the structural change of our economies and the optimization of the impact of their financial action; the variables knowledge, innovation and technology permeate the diverse aspects on which today’s development banking gravitate as a modern and vital instrument of public policy in the Latin American and the Caribbean process of economic change.

 
Topic 1:
Knowledge and innovation as the basis of development banking

In territorial development, the current trends propose to give way to a new kind of city, prepared to lead the society of knowledge. The goal is to situate cities as economically dynamic centers, with a balanced territory, committed to the preservation of the environment, and to become a point of reference for a competitive and innovative environment for business activities with high added value. Additionally, within development financial institutions, innovation and knowledge are part of the institutional DNA to offer solutions constantly adapting to the needs of productive sectors and the economic environment, and to become a reference point in the projection of our economies into the future.

Topic 2:
Sustainable sectorial policies and practices

In supporting environmental sustainability and the mitigation of climatic change, the work of development financial institutions involve concrete sectorial actions through specialized programs that focus on environmental sectors; as well as in general, the adoption of policies and the development of good practices in the sustainable financing of projects and investment in the different economic and social sectors promoted by banks. Together with international financial cooperation, the framework of national policies and the participation of the private financial sector, it is possible to advance towards achieving a greater impact from the sustainable financing of the region.

Topic 3:
Challenges and opportunities of the development banking as integrator between rural and urban spaces

Sectorial and territorial development considers the city and the country, urban and rural areas in balance. The integration of both sectors in their different physical, economic, commercial, social dimensions, among others, is a complex process which poses challenges and opportunities for development banking acting both in urban as in rural spaces, and that needs to contribute to the advance and deepening of such integration process.

  • What lessons can we learn for the integration process from the microcredit program designed for the city and the country?
  • What sectors need to be prioritized in the integration of rural and urban areas from the economic, environmental and social points of view?

SPECIAL TOPIC:
Core banking, a critical aspect for development banking management

Together with knowledge and innovation in development banking, technological support in line with banking products and services in an environment of continuous innovation and the development of information and communication technologies is critical. Development financial institutions, of different kinds, such as retail and wholesale banking, universal and sectorial banking or a mix of development banking and commercial banking, need to maintain their core banking platforms to ensure efficiency in their processes. In complex and wide topic, it is important to share banking experiences in the modernization of banking platforms, together with the suppliers of computer systems solutions for the financing industry.
